Description
Pulsed Radiofrequency is used in the treatment of chronic pain of the thoracic, cervical and lumbar spine where the pain is caused by irritation of the nerve roots. Pain arising from the nerves is mostly localised to the areas of the arms, neck, shoulders to fingers, in the legs it spreads below the knee and on to the foot.
The pulsed radiofrequency technique involves the application of moderate heat and intermittent electricity. The electrode heats up to temperature of 42 to 45 °C. Radiofrequency pulses fed to the target nerve block the transmission of information about pain to the brain.
Benefits
The operation is performed on the abdomen and under local anaesthesia; it is painless and extremely easy for the patient. It is carried out under continuous x-ray guidance. The targeted application of pulsed radiofrequency directly to the nerve means a targeted effect on the part of the nerve that causes pain.
